The popular coastal restaurant, with locations in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, opened its third location Wednesday in downtown Santa Ana. Two years after first announcing plans to bring its “’chowified’ menu to Santa Ana, Eat Chow is open. The four buildings that comprise The Strand are along the 100 block of 5th Street downtown. The latter is slated to open early next year, according to CAPREF Strand, the property owner. When it opens in May, HQ will join other Strand restaurants: Johnny Rockets, Shakeaway, Bruxie, Ritter’s Steam Kettle Cooking and The Pizza Press. The rest o the menu includes upscale sausages, sliders, flatbreads, tacos and burgers. Various raw seafood offerings include poke, ahi tartare and sushi rolls. The menu features typical gastropub appetizers such as hot wings, deviled eggs, marinated olives and fried pickles. “Our unique use of music and imagery enables the brand to stand as an authoritative destination for eating, drinking and hanging out,” managing director Mark Matters said in a statement. The owners of HQ refer to the gastro-lounge as a “prohibition-era” drink parlor as its main focus is pairing high-quality food and beverages with an eclectic atmosphere. The owners of the downtown property said HQ Gastropub of Woodland Hills is opening in the old RA Sushi space, which closed in 2015. ![]() In other food news, sushi and burgers are replacing a sushi joint at The Strand in Huntington Beach. Gastropub coming to The Strand, Eat Chow opens third outlet The 2,650-square-foot restaurant, the company’s fifth, is at 5633 Alton Parkway, in a former Baja Fresh. Most of the growth will be centered in Southern California however, the company is scouting locations in Arizona, Oregon and Nevada. Jhawar, who has a 51 percent stake in The Stand, is leading a plan to grow the chain to nearly 20 locations in five years. Though the two companies are completely separate, Wishengrad is the CEO of both The Stand and TLT Food. Last year Andrew Jhawar, a senior partner at private equity firm Apollo Global Management, partnered with Wishengrad to grow the brand. ![]() TLT offers an edgy twist on classic street foods, while The Stand showcases upscale versions of American staples. The brick-and-mortar version of The Lime Truck has locations in Irvine, Newport Beach, Westwood and Pasadena. The restaurant was conceived by Murray Wishengrad, co-founder of popular street food concept TLT Food. “The Stand brings the comfort of early century American diners to Southern California with a unique, modern twist, offering American classics redefined,” the company said. The diner-inspired menu features 11 sandwiches, 11 burgers, eight hot dogs and sausages, 20 draft beers, salads, chili, milkshakes and loaded fries. The 115-seat restaurant is scheduled to debut Thursday at the Oak Creek Shopping Center, which is anchored by Gelson’s and Orchard Supply Hardware. Launched in Encino in 2003, the restaurant operates other locations in Northridge, Woodland Hills and Century City. The fast-casual chain serves a bounty of upscale burgers, sandwiches (which they call Standwiches) and hot dogs. The Stand, a Los Angeles-based restaurant chain whose menu is a collision course of American comfort foods, is opening its first Orange County location later this week in Irvine. ![]()
